In my opinion, Mariah Carey is not a Soprano. Notice how Aretha Franklin CONSTANTLY and COMFORTABLY sings in the E5-G5 register. That's because the Soprano tessitura sits higher than a mezzo soprano's, and their mixed voice begins blending at around C#5-Eb5 (easily) all the way until F#5 which is when they have to make an effort to truly mix their voice to access the rest of their range. Compare this to the mezzo soprano who begins mixing around Ab4 and has to work hard to transition into mix around D5-Eb5. Much earlier than a soprano. That's why Mariah Carey *touches* G5 and G#5 and seldom ever sustains it. She blooms and flourishes at E5/F5. G5 is at the top of a Mezzo Soprano's range, hence, it is their money note. Sopranos, as seen with Aretha, dance and play at G5 because it is a lot easier for them. Mariah Carey also has a warm, deep lower register which for a soprano, whose low notes are B3-C4, would only be a dream. Nothing wrong with being a Mezzo Soprano. Mariah Carey has made good use of her instrument. Her tone at the beginning of her career was iconic of a mezzo and later, she purposely started using more nasal resonance for that signature girly tone. Many singers have done it. It's easy to change the color of your voice with nasality
